What to look for in activity-based costing software in City of Orange, New Jersey

Activity-based costing only works if every allocation can be traced and defended. PlaidCloud assigns costs from sources to targets using real driver data, organizes costs by function through activity mapping, and shows the full traceback — so finance can explain any number in the model instead of pointing at a spreadsheet nobody understands. It runs at full transaction-level detail on your own high-performance lakehouse, with dashboards included. This site focuses on the costing and allocation side of the problem. The recurring failure mode is not accuracy, it is defensibility: models that produce a number nobody outside finance can interrogate. PlaidCloud keeps the assignment rules explicit, versioned and traceable to source, and runs them at full transaction detail rather than on pre-aggregated balances.

If you are rebuilding the cost model rather than shopping for a report: evaluate on traceability, performance at full detail, how driver data is refreshed each period, audit history on the allocation logic itself, and whether reporting needs a separate BI license.

What to evaluate

• Traceability: can you walk any allocated cost back to its drivers and source?
• Model size — whether performance holds at full transaction-level detail
• How driver data gets refreshed each period, and by whom
• Auditability and change history on the allocation logic itself
• Whether reporting is built in or requires a separate BI license
